Causes:
Cerebral hemorrhage, tumor, thrombosis, embolism or other causes of ischemia
Symptoms:
Loss of muscle power in the affected part of the body, complete or partial.
Treatment:
Aconitum napellus; Arnica montana; Baryta carbonica; Belladonna atropa; Gelsemium sempervirens; Glonoinum; Guajacum; Laurocerasus; Nux vomica; Opium; Phosphorus; Plumbum metallicum; Rhus toxicodendron.
Aconitum napellus: Useful in the very early stages of the disorder, particularly when there is severe anxiety and fear. The skin is hot and dry and the pulse is bounding.
Arnica montana: A basic remedy. There is either an impending (threatened) stroke or weakness of the left side. A full pulse and noisy laboured breathing may occur.
Baryta carbonica: Useful for the period of paralysis after the acute episode, particularly if there is a right sided paralysis, which involves the tongue (speech and swallowing).
Belladonna atropa: Indicated when there is unconsciousness, a flushed face, dilated pupils and loss of bladder control. Acute retention of urine may occur.
Gelsemium sempervirens: Useful in chronic cases (completed stroke), to treat the paralysis (see Plumbum metallicum below).
Glonoinum: Useful remedy for a threatened attack with headache and cardiac failure.
Guajacum: Weakness is severe, the limbs lack co-ordination and strength; often painful. Forgetful.
Laurocerasus: In the acute form of the stroke, which sets in without a warning, with collapse and cold, sweating skin. Cold feet and legs. Clammy. Veins distended.
Nux vomica: Spasms of irritability and confusion. The limbs are weak but there are often sudden spasms of jerky movements. Drags the feet when walking; giddiness. Alcoholic. Irritable.
Opium: The patient is flushed; slow pulse and semiconscious or unconscious. The face is flushed and dark, and the breathing is heavy, the pulse is slow and the pupils pinpoint. Useful to prevent a threatened attack.
Phosphorus: Depression, weakness, anxiety, preference for cold foods and drinks are characteristic features, together with a feeling of apathy and exhaustion. Useful in degenerative or toxic disorders causing a stroke.
Plumbum metallicum: Follows Gelsemium sempervirens.
Rhus toxicodendron: Paralysis of the limbs; trembling after exertion; worse during and after rest, cold; feels better after changing position.
