HELLEBORUS NIGER

Christmas rose, Snow rose

Clinical Picture:
Delicate, psoric children; prone to brain disorders (Belladonna atropa, Cakarea carbonica, Tuberculinum).
Melancholy; woeful, despairing, silent; after typhoid; in girls at puberty or when menses fail to occur regularly after puberty. Irritable, easily angered; consolation increases anger (Ignatia amara, Natrium muriaticum, Sepia, Silicea); does not want to be disturbed (Gelsemium sempervirens, Natrium muriaticum).
Unconscious; answers slowly when questioned; a picture of idiocy.
Cerebral symptoms during dentition (Belladonna atropa, Podophyllum peltatum); acute hydrocephalus, automatic motion of one arm and leg.
Convulsions with extreme coldness of body, except head or occiput, which may be hot (Arnica montana). Greedily swallows cold water; bites spoon, but remains delirious.
Chewing motions of the mouth; corners of mouth are sore and cracked; nostrils dry, dirty and sooty.
Constantly picking lips, clothes, or boring into, the nose with the finger (while perfectly conscious, Arum triphyllum).
Boring head into pillow, rolling from side to side, beating head with hands.
Diarrhea, during acute hydrocephalus, dentition, pregnancy; watery, clear, tenacious, colourless mucus; white, jelly-like mucus; like frog spawn; involuntary.
Urine: Red, dark, scanty, coffee ground sediment; suppressed in brain disorders and nephritis; albuminous.
Oedema of brain, chest, abdomen; after exanthemata, intermittent; with fever, debility, suppressed urine; from suppressed exanthemata (Apis mellifica, Zincum metallicum).

Modalities:
Worse:

From evening until morning.
From uncovering.
Better:
Warmth.
Diuresis.

Relations:
Similar to Apis mellifica, Apocynum cannabinum, Arsenicum album, Belladonna atropa, Bryonia alba, Digitalis purpurea, Lachesis, Sulphur, Tuberculinum and Zincum metallicum in brain or meningeal affections.

Summary of Indications:
Depressed cerebral functions - hydrocephalus - disorders during dentition - diarrhea - urinary disorders.

Antidotes:
Camphora officinalis
Cinchona (China) officinalis.

Note:
Veratrum album and Veratrum viride are also in the Helleborus family. The best results of these remedies are in infants and children.
