ARGENTUM NITRICUM

Clinical Picture:
Acute or chronic diseases from unusual or long continued mental exertion.
Withered, dried-up, old looking patients. This picture of senility, emaciation and marasmus is progressive in infants; most pronounced in the lower extremities.
Ophthalmia neonatorum, profuse, purulent discharge; cornea opaque, ulcerated; lids sore, thick, swollen; agglutinated in the mornings.
Craving for sugar, but feels worse after eating it.
Belching accompanies most gastric disorders.
Flatulent dyspepsia with belching after every meal. The stomach feels as if it would burst with the wind; belching is difficult, finally air rushes out with great violence.
Diarrhea with green mucus, like chopped spinach.
Impotence; erection fails when coitus is attempted. Coitus may be painful.
Sensation of a splinter in the throat, when swallowing (also in Hepar sulphuris calcareum, Nitricum acidum, Silicea).

Modalities:
Worse:

Cold food.
Cold air.
Sweets.
Emotions.
Unusual mental exertion.
Better:
Open air.
Eructation.
Pressure.
Craves for the wind blowing in the face.
Bathing with cold v/ater.

Summary of Indications:
Ophthalmia neonatorum - gastroenteritis - diarrhea - impotence. (The 200th or 1000th potency in watery solution, the lotion is used as a topical application in ophthalmia neonatorum. It relieves the ophthalmia when the silver nitrate instillation as used in allopathic eye drops'9 has failed.)
